HVAC troubleshooting FAQ

Try these safe checks before you call.

These simple steps solve some common furnace and central air issues. Stop and call a professional if you smell gas, see smoke, encounter exposed wiring, or feel unsure.

Gas odor?Leave the building without using switches or phones inside. From a safe location, contact your gas utility or 911.
Why is my furnace running but not heating?+

First, set the thermostat to Heat and raise the setting a few degrees. Replace thermostat batteries if needed, check that the furnace switch and labeled breaker are on, and inspect the air filter. A severely dirty filter can restrict airflow. If heat does not return—or the breaker trips again—call for service.

Why won’t my central air conditioner turn on?+

Set the thermostat to Cool, lower the setting, and check its batteries. Confirm the indoor HVAC switch and labeled circuit breaker are on. If a breaker has tripped, reset it only once. Repeated trips point to an electrical or equipment problem that needs a technician.

Why is my AC running but blowing warm air?+

Check for a dirty filter and make sure supply and return vents are open and clear. Look outside for leaves or debris blocking airflow around the outdoor unit, but do not open the equipment. If you see ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil, turn cooling off and schedule service.

How often should I change my furnace filter?+

Check it monthly. Many one-inch filters need changing every one to three months. Homes with pets, smoke, remodeling dust, allergies, or heavy system use may need more frequent replacement. Follow the equipment and filter manufacturer’s guidance.

Why does my furnace or AC keep turning on and off?+

This is often called short cycling. Start with a clean filter and make sure vents are not blocked. Short cycling can also signal thermostat, airflow, electrical, ignition, or equipment problems. Continued cycling wastes energy and can stress the system, so arrange an inspection.

When should I stop troubleshooting and call a professional?+

Call for repeated breaker trips, burning or electrical odors, loud mechanical noises, water near electrical parts, visible damage, persistent short cycling, or a system that still cannot heat or cool after basic checks. Never attempt gas-line, combustion, refrigerant, or internal electrical repairs yourself.
